Friends Hospital is one of Philadelphia’s top mental health facilities. At Friends Hospital, we’re committed to excellence in psychiatric diagnostics, research, treatment and education. At our behavioral health facility, we strive to blend ever advancing medical treatments with a compassionate and supportive environment. Our multidisciplinary treatment teams, which include psychiatrists, psychologists, registered nurses, social workers, expressive arts therapists, certified addiction counselors and other mental health specialists, provide individualized care to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Attention visitors to Friends Hospital:

To help ensure a pleasant and safe visiting experience for our patients, the following changes will become effective February 4, 2013:

  • Visitors are encouraged to secure personal items such as purses and backpacks prior to their arrival at the hospital.  In those instances when this is not possible, lockers are available for the convenience of visitors.
  • Outside food and beverages will no longer be permitted on the units.  Friends Hospital thanks visitors for not bringing items including coffee, fast food, soda and snacks to the units.

Located on a beautiful 100-acre campus, Friends Hospital, the nation’s oldest private psychiatric hospital, continues to offer a quiet refuge where healing has taken place for nearly two centuries. Friends Hospital offers a continuum of care including level of care assessments; specially designed inpatient units for adolescents, adult and older adults; and a private residential rehabilitation program.

FIRST At Friends

“FIRST at Friends” is a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Using evidenced–based best practices, this approach centers psychiatric care and treatment around the concepts of FIRST – (F) family, (I) individual, (R) recovery, (S) strengths and (T) trauma-informed care. The patient, his/her loved ones and the treatment team work together to develop an individualized plan to assist the patient on the path to recovery.
