Joseph Garbely, D.O.
Dr. Joseph Garbely, a licensed psychiatrist and internist, currently holds the positions of Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of the Recovery Program at Friends Hospital. Prior to joining Friends Hospital, Dr. Garbely served as Medical Director of Temple University’s inpatient unit and as the Medical Director of the Capstone Program, which provided services to healthcare professionals with substance use disorders. He also held Medical Director positions at Willow Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Roslyn Nursing & Rehabilitation. Dr. Garbely holds professional board certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Special Qualifications in Psychosomatics and the American Board of Addiction Medicine
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Garbely has been awarded several honors, including Helen Ruske, MD Award - Excellence in Medical Student Teaching and the American Psychiatric Association 2007 Allan H. Cristol, MD Award - Excellence in Faculty Teaching 2006. He has had numerous articles published on topics such as, breast disease, physician supervision, substance abuse emergencies, and healthcare professionals with substance use disorders. He has conducted research on the long-term treatments of social phobias, developmental disabilities and mental illness, and is currently drafting a NIMH grant proposal in collaboration with The Office of Mental Retardation of Philadelphia. Dr. Garbely also held teaching positions at Temple University School of Medicine and LaSalle University of Philadelphia.
Dr. Garbely received a D.O. from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency training at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he was appointed Chief Resident 2000-2001, and completed his internal medicine internship at Abington Memorial Hospital and Delaware Valley Medial Center.
