As Medical Director of Friends Hospital’s Adolescent Unit, Dr. Karriem Lateef Salaam specializes in caring for young people who suffer from psychiatric or emotional difficulties. In this unit, he leads the team that is responsible for identifying and stabilizing the acute psychiatric problems that adolescents face, with the goal of returning them to home, school, or outpatient treatment as quickly and safely as possible while ensuring their continued recovery.

Before joining the Friends Hospital team, Dr. Salaam worked at Devereux Beneto Center in Malvern, Pa., as the attending Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. He was also previously employed by North Philadelphia Health System as a Contract Physician.

Dr. Salaam is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and has been a member on the American Board of Medical Specialties since 2006.  He is certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine, where he supervises residents and medical students during clinical rotation.

He is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, and Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society. Dr. Salaam is also the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including a merit award from the Women’s League of Science and Medicine, a prestigious APA/SAMSHA Fellowship, and the National Medical Fellowship Merit Award for minority medical students.

Dr. Salaam earned a bachelor’s degree from The College of New Jersey, formerly Trenton State College, in Trenton, N.J. He completed post-baccalaureate work at Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y., before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Camden, N.J. His post-graduate fellowships were completed at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Temple University Hospital.
