“Swing into Spring”: Keeping Service Excellence Alive at Friends Hospital

On Wednesday April 20th, the Service Excellence Committee hosted a “Swing into Spring” event for the staff members of Friends Hospital.  Staff enjoyed creative donuts from UNDERGRND Donuts which is a bright yellow donut truck usually found in University City, Philadelphia. Some of the popular donuts included “The Homer”, which was made with vanilla dunk, raw sugar, and chocolate bacon chunks and “Caramel Apple”, made with caramel dunk, dried apple, and vanilla swirl. While people were enjoying their donuts, other staff members were planting flowers and shrubs to create a beautiful garden located outside of the Tuke building.  It was a beautiful, warm and sunny day that was enjoyed by many.

PlantingThe Education Council Committee hosted a training led by Dr. Petra Kottsieper & Dr. Dawn Debrocco on Burnout and Compassion Fatigue and what we should do about it.  Two sessions were held on April 20th and both sessions had approximately 20 staff members in attendance. The training discussed how working in the mental health field can be stressful and overwhelming at times and it is important to recognize our feelings, triggers, and notice when we begin to feel burned out. Various coping skills were discussed and the training ended with a deep breathing exercise and a guided muscle relaxation technique.
